Phillies Likely To Pursue Veteran Arm

Sep 29, 2016 4:01 PM

Matt Klentak says the Philadelphia Phillies have placed a priority on adding a veteran pitcher this offseason.

In recent months, Pete Mackanin has publicly stated his desire to add an experienced bat or two.

"I don't think we will ever have the luxury of ignoring starting pitching," Klentak said. "Starting pitching is the name of the game. We saw it for the first month or two of the year. Every night we were pitching. Our starters were performing. ... We were competitive almost every night. At times, throughout the rest of the season, we've sputtered along. ... But if you can dictate the pace of the game on the mound, you always have a chance to win. We're never going to ignore that."

A.J. Preller Suspended 30 Days After Investigation Of Pomeranz Trade

Sep 19, 2016 1:00 AM

Major League Baseball has suspended A.J. Preller for 30 days without pay after an investigation into the Drew Pomeranz trade between the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.

Major League Baseball said it was looking into San Diego's handling of medical information of players they were trading. The league's investigators interviewed officials from both teams and then submitted their findings to Rob Manfred.

The matter is now considered closed.

Padres officials instructed their organization's athletic trainers to maintain two distinct files of medical information on their players: one for industry consumption and the other for internal use, according to sources.

Trainers were told in meetings during spring training that the distinction was meant to better position the team for trades.

"I accept full responsibility for issues related to the oversight of our medical administration and record keeping," Preller said in a statement. "I want to emphasize that there was no malicious intent on the part of me, or anyone on my staff, to conceal information or disregard MLB's recommended guidelines. This has been a learning process for me. I will serve my punishment and look forward to being back on the job in 30 days."

Chris Sale Reiterates He'd Prefer To Remain With White Sox

Sep 14, 2016 6:28 AM

The Chicago White Sox are expected to at least listen to offers for Chris Sale this offseason, but the left-hander's preference would be to remain with the club.

"I don't worry about that stuff," he said. "That will shake out on its own. I wear this uniform with a lot of pride. I hope I can continue to do that."

The Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers all made a push to acquire Sale before the Aug. 1 non-waiver deadline.

White Sox Will Listen On Chris Sale, But Trade Odds 'Slim'

Sep 13, 2016 6:41 AM

The Chicago White Sox will listen to trade offers for Chris Sale this winter, but a trade may be unlikely.

"The odds of getting what we feel we need to get are slim," a team source said. "That's why I think Chris will be with us in 2017."

Sale, 27, is 15-8 with a 3.03 ERA, 3.42 FIP and 205 strikeouts in 201.2 innings this season.

Twins May Consider Trading Brian Dozier For Front-Line Pitching

Sep 12, 2016 7:04 AM

Brian Dozier is just one home run away from joining Ryne Sandberg, Davey Johnson, and Rogers Hornsby as second basemen in the 40-homer club, but that doesn't mean the Minnesota Twins won't consider moving him.

The Twins are looking for front-line pitching and dangling Dozier might yield such a haul.

However, Dozier is under contract for the next two seasons at a very team-friendly rate. He's owed a total of $15 million through 2018.
